Indian mythology is full of folk tales of mongooses taking on and killing cobras.  None of the stories has them taking on a pride of lions and living to tell the tale. Enjoy the video below. (Hat tip to iflscience)

The video below is truly breathtaking.  Hat tip to all-that-is-interesting.com.  In 1996 scientists pointed the Hubble Space Telescope into a dark patch in the sky and discovered it was not so dark after all.  It is humbling to realize that our self-important species is a insignificant speck of the universe.  Enjoy:

Also worth seeing are these images captured by Hubble.  Truly spectacular.

In April the “Science” Test below from an unnamed South Carolina school hit the web.

The school was unverified, and there was some hope it was a hoax.  It appears that the test was legit and the school was the Blue Ridge Christian Academy.  Sadly, even league educated governors with science degrees peddle bullshit like adding creationism to science education curricula to “teach the controversy.”   This nonsense is not going away anytime soon.

This story from Lima, Peru is truly cool.  Faced with a city with almost no rain, 98% humidity and a water shortage Peru’s University of Engineering and Technology literally made water out of thin (albeit humid) air.  They put up a billboard that captured humidity from the air and turned it into water by reverse osmosis.  For more details click here and check out the video below.

This could be panacea for water starved regions with sufficient humidity to generate water.  However, before mass implementation of such techniques, studies should be performed to discover the impact on weather and rain patterns in other regions.  Robbing Peter to pay Paul could merely shift the water shortage elsewhere.  Yet this is a truly innovative solution that could help combat an issue that will cause more strife this century than oil – water shortages.

If Turkey did not have enough on its plate in the battle between its secularists and Islamists for the loyalties of the Turkish people, American creationists are now lending a hand by providing support for the opponents of the theory of evolution.  Stymied in their attempts to have their latest god waved a magic wand theory (euphemistically named Intelligent Design) included in American science books instead of philosophy or religion books they are increasingly making contact with science ignorant religious zealots in the Muslim world.  And they have set up a creation museum in Kentucky to promote their literal interpretation of the Bible as science.  Unfortunately, in a country that can sometimes be maddeningly ignorant on a host of issues they have had some success.  Only 39% of the country now believes in evolution and 36% have no opinion, a tribute to the success of their insidious attempts to change state educational curriculums to “teach the controversy” aided by politicians (including those with biology degrees) shamelessly catering to their base .
